Over the centuries, the castle was inhabited by various prominent historical figures. Initially, it was the residence of the powerful Counts of Gorizia, who used it as both an administrative center and a noble home. During their rule, the castle was the heart of the county’s political and economic life. The dynasty ended in 1500 with the death of the last count, Leonhard of Gorizia, after which the territory passed into the hands of the Habsburgs, who used the castle mainly for strategic military purposes. Over time, it was partially abandoned, repurposed for practical or military use, and suffered damage during Austrian rule.

During World War I, the castle was heavily bombed, marking the definitive end of its use as a residence. It was restored in the 20th century and now serves as a museum that preserves the legacy of the noble families and authorities who once lived there—standing as a symbol of Gorizia’s rich history.

Throughout the centuries, the fortress has been expanded and altered. Today, it retains its distinctive medieval architecture, with crenellated walls, solid towers, and a spacious inner courtyard.

Inside the castle is the Museum of Medieval Gorizia, which offers a rich collection of historical artifacts, weapons, costumes, and documents, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the life and traditions of medieval Gorizia.

The period-furnished rooms showcase settings such as the kitchen, the knights’ hall, and noble chambers, while the towers provide breathtaking views of the city. The main gate opens onto a path leading to Borgo Castello.
